On the third anniversary of the January 6th attack on our nation’s capitol, the Republican Party of Kentucky passed a resolution claiming people charged with crimes in the insurrection are being wrongfully held.
The Republican resolution claims January 6th defendants have been held without due process. The assault by the pro-Donald Trump mob led to five deaths and the injuries of more than 170 police officers. Four officers who defended the capitol that day later committed suicide.
In a statement, state Democratic Party Chair Colmon Eldridge said Kentucky’s GOP voted not to condemn the violent assault on democracy, but rather to support and defend those who attacked the capitol and law enforcement officers. The resolution mirrors one introduced by Republican state Senator Lindsey Tichenor. WEKU News reached out to several GOP officials for comment. None of them responded.
