Kenny Miller warns Rangers board they MUST fast track Gio van Bronckhorst stay or go decision

Frustrated Kenny Miller has urged the Rangers board to make a quick-fire decision on Gio van Bronckhorst 's Ibrox future to allow the team a mini pre-season to kickstart their campaign.

The Dutchman is under pressure after the Ibrox side went into the winter break with a whimper, with captain James Tavernier's spot-kick rescuing a point against St Mirren after a disappointing display in Paisley. The draw against the Buddies allowed Celtic to increase their advantage at the top of the Scottish Premiership to nine points, leaving major questions surrounding the long-term future of Van Bronckhorst as Ibrox boss.

Rangers favourite Miller insists the board have to make a clear decision over the future of the boss imminently - as he urged the higher-ups to the potential next boss as must time as possible to revamp the squad. The league enters cold storage for five weeks while the World Cup takes place in Qatar, giving bosses a chance to enjoy a second pre-season midway through the campaign.

Miller told BBC Sportsound that he would want a new boss in the door within two weeks to allow a squad overhaul if Van Bronckhorst leaves. He said: "After last week you thought maybe Gio was on a shaky peg, then there was a bit of word (saying) ‘we are sticking by him, we will get to the break and get the players back and regroup’.

"Since then there has been more dropped points. I think that will be a topic of conversation at Ibrox at the moment as well. There needs to be some kind of decision. A real, clear decision. If that is the decision to go with Gio then there is a lot of work that needs to be done in this break.”

When it was put to Miller that there was no rush to make the decision, Miller went on: “Well, I think there is. I think a decision needs to be made on way or another.

“If the decision is going to go one way and Gio was to leave then this break gives you the wee moment (to decide) if you are going to stick or you are going to twist. If you are going to twist then this break gives you effectively what is a pre-season again, which we have never had mid-season. Even the winter break is not this length of time. If there is a new guy he is going to need a bit of time to work, and it’s a completely different way, he needs time. It’s a fresh voice and it could make an impact.

“If the route forward is with Giovanni, that’s fine. If not they have 10 to 14 days to get someone else in.”
