Kenny Miller goes into Rangers VAR meltdown as Todd Cantwell sparks rule review demand with Celtic supporting case

Raging Kenny Miller has called for the SFA to look at the rules for a VAR check on second yellow cards following Callum Slattery's red card against Rangers.

Slattery was shown a second booking by referee Nick Walsh on the 75th minute of the defeat at Fir Park after he threw his arm back and made contact with Ibrox midfielder Todd Cantwell. The Rangers playmaker went down holding his face, but the replays showed the the Motherwell midfielder's arm had made contact with the neck and torso of the playmaker before the sending off.

VAR Andrew Dallas was unable to intervene in the situation and send referee Nick Walsh to the pitchside monitor, as the technology is not able to get involved in yellow card offences. Miller also used the sending off of Hibs Elie Youan to strengthen his case for a review of the rules after he received a second booking for raised a boot on Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers - leaving Lee Johnson furious.

Asked it we expected too much from VAR when it arrived in Scotland, Miller told Clyde 1 Superscoreboard: "I think we did. I went to Australia when it came in and I remember I expected everything to be correct, and it's just not the case.

"It is still coming down to a human being look at something and interpreting it within the law, and they are going to get things wrong. Part of the problem, I feel, is I don't think referees understand how footballers behave, or the people who make the rules understand how footballers behave.

"Firstly, you can't say one guy is going to move the exact same as the other, but the Slattery one - I have only seen it once, I've seen it live. I thought he was trying to put his arm up, like every footballer does to protect the ball from the pressure of Todd Cantwell.

"Cantwell goes down like a sack of potatoes holding his face, when it looks like he hit him in the neck. I didn't really like that, but even if he did catch him in the face that it's a yellow card, or a second yellow card.

Referee Nick Walsh sends off Motherwell's Callum Slattery (left) for a challenge on Rangers star Todd Cantwell (PA)

"There is no excessive force in it. You have seen players who have had a little check where the pressure is coming from, and throw their arm back.

"Slattery's eyes are fixed on the ball. He can feel the pressure and he puts his arms up to stop the pressure coming into him and the ball.

"That was my initial thought, because I know how people behave. Referees have got to have an understanding of situations in the game.

"Again, I think that is very, very harsh. What I would say is the rule needs to be looked at on that. Motherwell are going down to 10 men, and Rangers are probably going to win against 11 men.

"Hibs again go down to 10 men, and it's 0-0 at Celtic Park after 24 minutes. It's an uphill struggle. I think the rule could be changed for looking at second yellow cards, particularly in these situations."
