Kenny Dalglish has blasted UEFA and branded them a bunch of incompetents as he hit out at the shocking treatment of English referee Anthony Taylor following the Europa League Final in midweek.
Taylor was on the end of a foul-mouthed rant from Roma boss Jose Mourinho following the Italian side’s defeat to Sevilla on penalty kicks before Taylor and his family were subjected to abuse as they made their way home through Budapest airport the day after the game. Dalglish slammed organisers UEFA, referencing last season’s shambolic organisation at the Champions League final when fans of his old club Liverpool suffered terrifying congestion outside the stadium.
And writing in his column for the Sunday Post, Dalglish said: “What Seville have done in the Europa League, winning it seven times, is quite remarkable but what happened in the aftermath caught my attention. The abuse that referee Anthony Taylor and his family suffered was disgraceful. They shouldn’t have been subjected to such vile abuse.
“Anthony most certainly upset Jose Mourinho. But a line was crossed by so-called Roma fans. The scenes in the airport in Budapest were totally inappropriate and and unacceptable. I find it incredible that UEFA allowed the match officials and their families from that game to go through the airport without proper security and protection.
“My goodness, do UEFA never learn? What do these people do to actually justify their positions? What does UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin think of the lack of competence within his organisation? We keep hearing from them that lessons have been learned after every incident that occurs on their watch. But it doesn’t seem to be the case.
“The words sound really hollow. Apologies aren’t good enough anymore. There needs to be clear and concise action. Have they forgotten about Liverpool v Real Madrid in Paris last year in the Champions League final? It just seems to be one thing after another with UEFA. I think people have lost trust in them.”
