Kenneth Branagh's King Lear review and Robert Bathurst joins us - The Standard Theatre Podcast

This week's theatre podcast is live!

Robert Bathurst, star of Toast of London and Cold Feet, joins us to talk about starring in a very special revival of Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell at the Coach and Horses pub in Soho.

He chats to Nick Curtis about the play made famous by Oscar-winner Peter O’Toole, which focuses on the writing and wit of late Spectator journalist Jeffrey Bernard.

The play is staged in the pub which was one of the favourite haunts of the “notorious drinker” and has such infamous episodes as the cat racing syndicate and Bernard's "egg trick", which Bathurst has to pull off every night. He reveals if it's ever gone wrong.

We review Sir Kenneth Branagh's take on King Lear at the Wyndham’s Theatre. He directs and stars in this much abridged West End production of Shakespeare’s epic tragedy, but could he pull it off on his first stint in the West End for eight years?

Another big new show is The Time Traveller’s Wife at the Apollo Theatre, an all singing and dancing adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger's bestseller with music by Joss Stone and Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart. So was this one to revisit time after time, or is it time to say goodbye?

Plus, the team discuss news of Isabelle Huppert’s return to the stage, with the French icon due to appear at the Barbican as Mary Stuart, and answer your questions.

We'd love to hear more from you so do get in touch at theatrepod@standard.co.uk
