Kennedy 'to stay at Celtic' as Postecoglou 'set to admit defeat after Spurs pursuit'

Ange Postecoglou looks set to admit defeat in his pursuit of Celtic assistant manager John Kennedy, according to reports.

The new Tottenham Hotspur boss was keen to add Kennedy to his backroom staff, but it looks as if he will be staying put at Celtic, as reported by The Sun.

The report states that Postecoglou looks set to appoint Chris Davies as his assistant manager in place of Kennedy. Davies, who was linked with the vacant manager's job at Swansea City, looks set to deny a Celtic reunion between himself and Brendan Rodgers, with whom he worked with at both the Glasgow side and Leicester City.

This will clear the path for Kennedy to retain his place as Celtic's No2, with incoming manager Rodgers keen to keep the former Scotland international as part of his coaching setup.

Rodgers is set to be announced as the new Celtic manager, having previously been at the club from 2016 to 2019. During his time at the club, he won seven trophies, including three League Cups, two Scottish Premierships and two Scottish Cups.

Meanwhile, Celtic striker Kyogo Furuhashi was amongst the goals once again, as Japan eased past 10-man El Salvador 6-0 this afternoon.

The striker, fresh off of his 34-goal season for Celtic, was a second-half substitute for his national team, converting a well-placed header in the 72nd minute for the Samurai Blue at the City of Toyota Stadium

Fellow countryman Reo Hatate started the game, with the Celtic midfielder playing the full 90 minutes for Hajime Moriyasu’s side. Winger Daizen Maeda was less fortunate, as he was left on the bench for the duration of the game.

For Kyogo and Hatate, this was the first time that both players had been called up since their World Cup squad snub by Moriyasu. Both players took their respective opportunities this afternoon in the side and will be looking for more Japan appearances in the coming months.

It was a comfortable win for Japan, with the opponents down to 10 men for the vast majority of the game following Ronald Gomez’s dismissal in the third minute.

This is the first of a double-header for Moriyasu’s side against American opposition, with the side taking on Peru next Tuesday.
