Kemar Roofe offers Rangers fitness hope as striker steps up Premiership opener return attempt

Kemar Roofe's Rangers recovery continues apace as the striker aims to get himself fit for the season opener.

The Jamaican was left behind as Rangers flew out to the Algarve last week for a pre-season training camp. He suffered an injury during a training session prior to the squad flying out from Glasgow airport, so stayed at home in order to receive treatment and work on his fitness.

There were concerns that the calf problem could force him to miss the 2022/23 Premiership kick-off. Giovanni van Bronckhorst takes his team to Livingston for the lunchtime kick-off on Saturday, July 30 as they begin their attempt to wrestle the title back from champions Celtic. But Roofe is hard at work an an attempt to be ready for the opening day and has offered fans hope that he'll make it. The 29-year-old was shown doing conditioning work in the gym, strengthening his calf muscle as physio Andy Renshaw put him through his paces.

He captioned the video: "Great to have @roofe with me for a few days last week working his way back from a calf injury. Progressions that include functional positions are integral to go back to sport, and stay back."

Roofe was set to fill the Alfredo Morelos-shaped hole left in the Rangers attack at the end of last season. The Colombian was ruled out of the run-in after a thigh problem ended his campaign, meaning he sat out the Europa League and Scottish Cup finals.

But Roofe was injured during the Scottish Cup semi-final win over Celtic at Hampden. He came on as a late sub against Frankfurt in Seville, but was far from fully fit as the Ibrox side suffered a heartbreaking penalty shoot-out defeat.

And he faces increased competition for playing time this season. Giovanni van Bronckhorst has signed two strikers to boost his firepower for a title tilt, with Antonio Colak and Tom Lawrence coming in to add depth at the top end of the pitch.

Roofe scored 16 times in 36 appearances for the Light Blues last term. He has two years left on his Ibrox deal.
