Singer Kelsy Karter has finally confirmed that her Harry Styles face tattoo is a fake, admitting that the attention-grabbing inking was part of a publicity stunt for her latest track.
The New Zealand-born musician unveiled the dramatic face art earlier this week on Instagram after visiting Los Angeles-based tattoo artist Romeo Lacoste.
In a video posted on her YouTube channel titled “How I rocked the entire world for $300,” the 24-year-old musician revealed that the ‘tattoo’ had been faked using special effects makeup in order to generate buzz for her new track, Harry.
“What would the rock legends that inspired me have done in 2019?” Karter asks in the video, adding: “To pull this off, we needed a celebrity tattoo artist to make it look real, so we called Romeo.”
“He traced Harry’s 2017 Rolling Stone cover, applied it to my face, and then a special FX makeup artist did her thing.”
She admitted that her fake inking “looked ridiculous,” but said “that was the point.”
“Every major publication and news outlet in the world covered the story and more importantly the song. I had your attention,” she admitted.
“This has always been about rock and roll. Harry is an anthem for the fans. The tattoo is gone. All that’s left is the music. Which is what my rock star team and I had planned all along.”
When the tattoo was branded a “publicity stunt” by Styles fans earlier this week, Karter refused to confirm whether the inking was real or not, telling The Edge Afternoon Show that he simply wanted to “express” her love for the singer.
“I just wear my heart on my cheek and I couldn’t really control what went on from there,” she said.
Karter has also reportedly written a track for Styles’ former bandmate Zayn Malik, though it is yet to be released.
