Kelly Rowland says Chris Brown deserves 'grace and forgiveness' as he's booed at awards

Kelly Rowland has urged the public to treat Chris Brown with 'grace and forgiveness', as she said 'we are all human'.

The Destiny's Child star, 41, accepted an award on behalf of 33-year-old Chris during Sunday night's American Music Awards, but was met with loud boos from the audience.

Following the ceremony, Kelly said it was sad to see the crowd's reaction and encouraged people to think before 'pointing fingers'.

Kelly explained: "I believe that grace is very real and we all need a dose of it and before we point fingers at anybody, we should realise how grateful we are for every moment that we get.

"I just think it's important to remember to be human. We are humans.

"We all need to be forgiven for anything that we could be doing, anything that we're thinking. We all come up short in some sort of way and grace is real," Kelly said during a chat with TMZ.

Chris has been surrounded by controversy in recent years after assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009.

He was arrested following the incident and sentenced to community service and domestic violence counselling.

In a 2017 documentary, Chris Brown: Welcome to my Life, Brown said he "felt like a f**king monster".

The singer was also defended by Kelly during Sunday night's awards ceremony as she called out the audience for their criticism.

As she announced Chris as the winner and the audience reacted with boos, Kelly said: "Excuse me, chill out. I want to tell Chris thank you for making great R&B music and I want to tell him thank you for being an incredible performer.

"I'll take this award, bring it it you, I love you, congratulations."

Chris beat fellow nominees Brent Faiyaz, Giveon, Lucky Daye and The Weeknd to win the award, which was presented at the Microsoft Theatre.

Chris had been due to perform at the star-studded ceremony in tribute to Michael Jackson, who died at the age of 50 in 2009.

A day before he was due to perform, however, Chris shared a video of his rehearsal for the performance on Instagram, with the caption: "U SERIOUS?"

He then added in the comments: "WOULDVE been the ama performance but they cancelled me for reasons unknown."
