Kellie Harrington's mam calls for her and Katie Taylor to headline at Croke Park

Olympic champion Kellie Harrington’s mother has backed calls for Ireland’s boxing golden girls to headline a Croke Park double-header.

Proud mum Yvonne, whose family home is just streets away from Croker, told the Irish Mirror it would be “amazing” for Kellie and Katie Taylor.

We revealed that bosses of the famous GAA stadium confirmed it would be “available” in October for a Katie Taylor world title rematch with Amanda Serrrano and said it would be “fantastic”.

RTE’s Joe Duffy yesterday announced that Kellie confirmed to his Liveline show she would be “absolutely delighted” to fight on the undercard before Katie takes on Serrano.

Champion boxer Kellie, who won gold last summer in Tokyo, would likely compete as an amateur on the card before London 2012 winner Katie’s proposed headlining of historic fight night at Croker in October.

Having the two A-listers of Irish boxing together on the same bill at the stadium would be dream come true fans, according to award-winning presenter Joe.

Kellie’s mum Yvonne told the Irish Mirror: “If that’s what Kellie wants, I think it would be great and I hope it happens for her.

“They are great girls. Katie is a credit to her mother and her family and the whole country is so proud of both of them.”

But Yvonne admitted that she would not be able to watch the two golden medal winners, saying: “I get too nervous.

“I don’t think I could go to Croke Park to see her boxing. I’ve only been to three or four of her fights.

“But it would be great for Kellie and for both girls if they could have a big night in Croke Park.”

Katie, 35, won the first ever all-women’s headline fight in New York’s Madison Square Garden last weekend by beating the 33-year-old Puerto Rican.

She now wants to defend her world title in Croke Park and said: “Imagine fighting in front of 80,000 people at Croke Park. Absolutely that can happen.”

Pat Gates of the Croke Park Area Residents’ Alliance is in favour of the bout as a “special one-off event” for a “national hero”.

After listening to some residents’ concerns, Pat last night said: “If and when this becomes a reality, perhaps we will have more to say.”
