Kellie Harrington opens up on retirement plans on RTE's The Late Late Show

Olympic gold medalist Kellie Harrington revealed on The Late Late Show this evening that she plans to retire from boxing after the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

The Tokyo gold medalist, who just took home gold at the European Championships last week, was appearing on the show to promote her new book entitled 'Kellie.' In a wide-ranging interview, the Dubliner spoke about her beginnings as a troubled teenager and how boxing helped 'save her life.'

With victory at the European Championships, Kellie has completed the hat-trick of major titles having already won World and Olympic Gold. The 32-year-old will look to defend her crown in Paris in a couple of years time, and after that retirement is likely.

When Ryan Tubridy mentioned how it is difficult for a sportsperson to look back on their career before they retire, Kellie replied "Yeah exactly, which is not too far away so we keep going."

Harrington then confirmed that 'not too far away' refers to the next iteration of the Olympic Games in 2024.

"I'm going to give it a bash... I'm just going to see how it goes."

And after the Olympics, what does Kellie plan on doing?

"Eat all the pies!"

Harrington will be 34 years of age by the time the next Olympic Games rolls round. If she defends her crown in 2024, Harrington will join rarefied air as only Claressa Shields and Nicola Adams are the only women to have defended gold medals.
