Keiren Westwood's potential move to Shamrock Rovers put on ice

Keiren Westwood won’t be joining Shamrock Rovers this summer.

But the Hoops are leaving the door open for the ex-Ireland goalkeeper - capped 21 times - to sign at a later date, possibly next season.

Westwood, 38, emerged as a target for the champions last month and is interested in signing.

But he is dealing with a personal matter in England that means a move has to be put on ice for now.

Rovers are assessing their goalkeeping options with No 1 Alan Mannus sidelined for the foreseeable future with a broken finger.

The 41-year-old is also retiring at the end of this League of Ireland season.

Leon Pohls has stepped up to replace him in recent games but the Hoops are looking for additional cover.

Rovers boss Stephen Bradley said today: “I don't think Keiren's stuff will happen, in terms of a few things at home that don't fit at the moment.

“Everything fitted both parties football-wise but he has some issues with his family to sort out.

“Hopefully we can revisit it at some point in the future. He's a top keeper and if it was an option for next year we'd look at it.

“We have four or five keepers that we like and we had two of them in, one that we really like, so we have options but Keiren is a keeper of real pedigree.”

Mannus will see the specialist tomorrow for an update on his situation with Bradley reluctant to make a call on when he could return.

“We’re hoping we get some good news on a timeframe and we’ll make a decision after that,” added the manager.

“We hope the news is that he’ll be back after the break but that's up to the surgeon. We could be looking at longer but that’s the best-case scenario.”
