Keir Starmer to give emergency press conference on far-right violence – how to watch

KEIR Starmer will hold an emergency press conference from Downing Street on Thursday afternoon in the wake of far-right violence across the UK.

The Labour leader had summoned police chiefs to No 10 to discuss riots which broke out in the wake of an horrific stabbing attack in Southport which killed three young girls.

The suspect has been named as Axel Rudakubana, who was born in Cardiff to Rwandan parents, but conspiracy theories spread online claimed the attacker was a Muslim who crossed the Channel on a small boat.

Far-right demonstrations targeted mosques and Muslim-owned businesses amid scenes of violent unrest in Southport, London, Hartlepool, and Manchester, while a demonstration in Aldershot saw a tense stand-off with riot police.

When will Keir Starmer hold a press conference and how can I watch it?

The Prime Minister is due to speak to cameras outside Downing Street at 4pm on Thursday, August 1.

It will be shown on No 10's YouTube channel, with the live stream below:

The speech will also be broadcast live on news channels such as Sky News.

At the meeting in Downing Street, Starmer told senior police officers: “I wanted to send a message to each of you and, through you, your officers to say that this Government supports the police, supports what you are doing, and to be absolutely clear: this is not protest, this is violent disorder and action will be taken.

“This Government will make sure you have got the powers you need and will back you in using those powers.”

His speech at No 10 is likely to cover similar ground.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood also attended the meeting with at least a dozen police bosses.

Merseyside Chief Constable Serena Kennedy told the meeting by videolink that the force is “determined to get justice” for the deadly attack in Southport on Monday, and to identify all those who took part in rioting on Tuesday in the seaside town.
