Keir Starmer will attack Rishi Sunak for failing to understand the misery being imposed on families when they clash for the first time at PMQs.
The Labour leader will accuse the “out of touch” Prime Minister of not getting how difficult it is for households facing the threat of losing hundreds of pounds in benefits or who have seen their mortgage payments rocket because of the Tories’ botched handling of the economy.
At a Shadow Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Mr Starmer warned his frontbench team the government will get "a significant poll bounce" now Liz Truss has been replaced.
In a brutal takedown of his new rival, the Labour leader said: "He stabbed Boris Johnson in the back when he thought he could get his job… He will now try and disown the Tory record of recent years and recent months and pretend that he is a new broom."
But Mr Starmer gleefully pointed out that Mr Sunak "got thrashed by Liz Truss" in Tory leadership contest this summer.
"No wonder he doesn't want to fight a general election,” he added.
Rachel Reeves, who shadowed Mr Sunak during his time at the Treasury, has been helping Mr Starmer to prepare for PMQs.
Labour chiefs believe a series of gaffes by Mr Sunak, including when he didn’t know how to pay using contactless, have damaged his reputation amongst voters.
It comes as a YouGov poll showed two thirds of Britons (67%) believe the new PM is out of touch with ordinary people.
Only 13% consider him to be in touch with regular people's concerns.
Mr Sunak is the wealthiest inhabit of No10. He and his wife Akshata Murty having a £730million fortune, more than twice that of King Charles and the Queen.
He was the first Government minister to make the Sunday Times Rich List earlier this year - coming joint 222nd with his wife.
The couple have a portfolio of four homes including a £7million mews house in Kensington, £5.5million Santa Monica beach penthouse, and a Georgian manor house in his Richmond constituency in North Yorkshire, which has a £400,000 pool and spa.
