Starmer speaks to Trump about US visit after Israel's Netanyahu was first foreign leader at White House

Sir Keir Starmer has spoken to Donald Trump about his first visit to America since the president re-entered the White House.

Downing Street announced the discussions between the US president and the PM but gave no details about the upcoming trip.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was the first foreign leader to be welcomed to the White House by Trump.

Other world leaders are scrambling to get an invite to Washington.

Sir Keir spoke to Trump during a meeting with the President’s special envoy to the UK.

A No10 spokeswoman said: “The Prime Minister was pleased to host President Trump’s special envoy to the United Kingdom, Mark Burnett, at Downing Street last night, during which he took a call from President Trump and discussed his forthcoming visit to the US.

“Mr Burnett and the Prime Minister agreed on the unique and special nature of the UK-US relationship, the strength of our alliance, and the warmth of the connection between the two countries.

“Mr Burnett reflected on his personal connections to the UK, and his mother’s experience working part-time in Downing Street as a waitress over 30 years ago.

“They emphasised the huge potential for even stronger collaboration on trade, tech and cultural matters between the US and the UK, and looked forward to working together.”

The UK government has been scrambling to build bridges with the Trump administration after a number of Cabinet ministers made derogatory remarks about the US president, often many years ago.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy previously called Trump a “neo-Nazi sympathising sociopath” and “narcissistic”.

Lord Mandelson, Britain’s new ambassador to Washington, described Trump as “reckless” and a “bully” in an interview in 2019.

But so far there is little sign that these previous barbs are undermining trans-Atlantic ties.

Trump has said he is going to hit the European Union with tariffs but signalled that the UK may escape the full force of them, though, this may partly depend on whether Washington regards VAT as a tariff.

So far, Trump has not exempted Britain from 25 per cent levies on imports of steel and aluminium to the US.

On Ukraine, Sir Keir has warned that any Ukraine peace talks must involve Kyiv and not just be bilateral discussions between Trump and Vladimir Putin.

The Prime Minister has also stressed that Ukraine is on an “irreversible” path to Nato membership, while Washington has emphasied that this will not be part of any peace deal to end the conflict which Putin launched nearly three years ago.

Mr Burnett is a British-born television producer who helped Mr Trump launch the US version of The Apprentice reality TV show.

He was appointed special envoy by the US administration in December.

Reports of his visit to Downing Street emerged on Thursday morning, when it was said he was taking part in an "officials-only meeting".
