USA has 'betrayed the people of Ukraine', says Scottish Greens co-leader

THE Scottish Greens co-leader has slammed Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to Scotland following the US President’s suspension of military aid to Ukraine.

Patrick Harvie told The National: “The Trump administration has betrayed the people of Ukraine while giving the greenlight to Vladimir Putin and his gangster regime to carry on with their onslaught.

“Any peace settlement must be one that is negotiated with Ukraine at the table and that respects Ukraine's borders. It cannot be imposed by Trump and Putin redrawing maps and carving it up as if this was 100 years ago.”

This follows Tuesday’s news that the USA has suspended all military aid to Ukraine, following last week’s tense Oval Office exchange between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Trump.

During the meeting, Trump and vice president JD Vance berated Zelenskyy for what they perceived as insufficient gratefulness for the more than 180 billion dollars (£142.2 billion) in military aid the US has sent to Kyiv since Russia invaded three years ago.

Harvie continued: “Donald Trump has already shown that he does not respect human rights, democracy or basic international norms. He has proven that he cannot be trusted and should not be viewed as an ally.”

Despite recent tensions Donald Trump is still set to visit Scotland at some point in the future.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer had previously gifted Trump an invitation from the King to come to one of his Scottish properties at a future date when he met with him at the White House earlier last week.

Harvie went on to say that carrying on with the state visit would be a mistake: “Grovelling to him and giving him all the trapping of a state visit would be the worst possible signal that we could send.

"If Keir Starmer wants to show solidarity with Ukrainian people then he must cancel it.”

A petition to cancel the upcoming visit has gone viral, gathering over 150,000 signatures in less than a week. The Prime Minister dismissed the petition.
