KCom and Quickline connect South Humber Bank communites to superfast broadband

Several South Bank villages are now being connected to super fast broadband, thanks to the efforts of two Humber regional providers.

KCom and Quickline are both expanding their networks, offering speeds of up to 1Gbps - improvements on 3Mbps for some.

Rural specialist Quickline has connected Burton upon Stather and Thealby, north of Scunthorpe, with North and South Killingholme and East Halton also added to the west, near Immingham.

Carlton, Camblesforth, Newland, Barlow and Drax, south of Selby, have also been added, so too Deighton, south of York and Digby, Rowston and Scopwick, south of Lincoln.

In total Quickline has provided access to more than 7,000 homes and businesses in recent months.

Julian Chalk, head of network enablement and engagement at the Willerby headquartered firm, said: "Our fibre service is a game-changer for communities which have endured slow, inconsistent broadband for too long. In just eight months, we’ve taken full fibre to more than 20 communities as part of our accelerated rollout programme."

For KCom, the wharf community of Gunness on the east bank of the River Trent boasts more than 360 properties.

The expansion has been welcomed by North Lincolnshire Council leader, Rob Waltham MBE. He said: “A quality broadband network is now an essential part of any community - people rely on fast internet. Especially now, with more people working from home, children doing their homework online and older people keeping in touch with their families, a good broadband connection is vital and that’s why I welcome this investment in North Lincolnshire.

“There will be some disruption while the cables are installed but once the teams have gone, and the paths have been restored, the benefits will be huge. We are committed to enabling communities to flourish and this latest technology will help towards that.”

It is part of a second phase £62 million expansion, with 50,000 new homes and businesses targeted in the next two years. Caistor, Louth, Market Rasen, Alford and Mablethorpe are also on the KCom horizon.

Neil Bartholomew, managing director of KCom Retail, said: “It’s great to see work underway to connect Gunness to our full fibre network which will transform local residents’ online experience.

“There was a huge show of interest among villagers in bringing our network here and I’m delighted that we’re now well on the way to connecting Gunness to what is one of the best full fibre broadband networks in the UK.

“We’re determined to connect rural communities that have often been forgotten by the big national providers to make sure that no-one is left behind in this digital world and so everyone has access to the many opportunities being online can offer.”
