PATNA: Senior JD(U) leader and former Rajya Sabha member K C Tyagi (72) returned as ‘special advisor and chief spokesperson’ of the party on Monday, just two months after the surprise omission of his name from the party’s list of new office-bearers.
The notification regarding Tyagi's appointment as ‘special advisor and chief spokesperson’ was issued by the party's national president Rajiv Ranjan alias Lalan Singh.
“Shri K C Tyagi is an experienced leader associated with socialist movement and has worked closely with Choudhary Charan Singh (former Prime Minister) and Shri Nitish Kumar (chief minister of Bihar), hence we want his organizational experience. So, he is appointed as ‘special advisor and chief spokesperson’ of the party,” Lalan Singh said in a statement.
Tyagi thanked CM Nitish Kumar and the party chief Lalan Singh for his new assignments.
Earlier on March 21, when the JD(U) headed by its new president Lalan Singh released the list of its 32-member national office-bearers, the name of Tyagi was conspicuously missing from the list. Many in the JD(U) were surprised by the omission of the name of Tyagi, who had been the party’s secretary general-cum-national spokesperson and the party’s face in the national capital for 20 years. Then, Tyagi had told TOI that he was not included in the list of new office-bearers because he himself had made a request to the party’s de facto leader Nitish Kumar for not allotting him any post.
A day after (on March 22), the JD(U) came out with a clarification in which the party asserted that its former functionary K C Tyagi would continue to be a “strong pillar of the party” though he was relieved of organisational responsibilities upon his “repeated requests to CM Nitish Kumar”.
Tyagi was sent to the Rajya Sabha by the JD(U) in 2013. He remained the JD(U) member in the Upper House from 2013 to 2016, representing the state of Bihar. Earlier, he was the Lok Sabha member from 1989 to 1991 from the erstwhile Hapur seat (now Ghaziabad) in Uttar Pradesh.
