Katy Perry Defends Working With Alleged Abuser Dr Luke In Deeply Uncomfortable Interview

CONTENT WARNING: This article discusses sexual assault.

After considerable backlash, Katy Perry has finally addressed her decision to work with music producer Lukasz ‘Dr Luke’ Gottwald. Well, kind of.

Perry appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast on Wednesday where host Alex Cooper asked her why she chose to work with Gottwald on her latest singles “Woman’s World” and “Lifetimes”, despite the allegations of sexual assault waged against him by fellow pop artist Kesha.

The “We R Who We R” singer originally sued Gottwald in 2014, alleging that she faced emotional and sexual abuse whilst working with him. Gottwald consistently denied the allegations and filed a defamation lawsuit against her. In 2016, Kesha’s original lawsuit was dismissed and in 2023, Kesha and Gottwald reached a private settlement.

In the podcast episode, Cooper straight up asked Perry why she decided to partner with Gottwald on her most recent tracks.

“Look, I understand that it started a lot of conversations, and he was one of many collaborators that I collaborated with, but the reality is it comes from me,” Perry replied.

“The truth is I wrote these songs from my experience of my whole life going through this metamorphosis. And, he was one of the people to help facilitate all that—one of the writers, one of the producers. And, I am speaking from my own experience.”

Perry went on, noting how “Woman’s World” was created from feeling empowered in her new role as a mother after giving birth to her daughter Daisy Dove in 2020.

“When I speak about “Woman’s World”, I speak about feeling so empowered now, as a mother, as a woman, giving birth, creating life, creating another set of organs, a brain, a heart. I created a whole-ass heart! And I did it, and I’m still doing it. And I’m still a matriarch and feeling really grounded in that,” Perry continued.

“That’s where I’m speaking from. And, so, I created all of this with several different collaborators, people I’ve collaborated with from the past, from Teenage Dream era, all of that.”

Gottwald has worked with Perry on some of her biggest worldwide bangers such as “I Kissed A Girl”, “Teenage Dream”, “California Gurls” and of course, every MasterChef fan’s favourite, “Hot N Cold”.

While some fans have claimed that Perry’s collaboration with Gottwald on her forthcoming album 143 is most likely contractual, it’s incredibly unlikely. The last time she worked with Gottwald was on her Prism album in 2013. She did not work with him on the Witness or Smile albums which occurred after the sexual assault allegations were made public.

Unfortunately for Perry, she hasn’t just been copping it for working with Gottwald on her latest releases. Her latest single “Women’s World” has been absolutely slammed by critics and fans for sounding like AI attempted to write a feminist anthem. Although Perry responded to the backlash by claiming the clip was satire, it didn’t really land. Especially after having a producer who was previously accused of sexual assault working on a wannabe feminist bop.

While the video has elements reminiscent of her 2010 bubblegum pop era, it has sadly missed the mark. In 2024, we have the likes of Charli xcx, Sabrina Carpenter and Chappel Roan dominating the girlie pop game with fresh vibes, sounds and energy.

Perry is going to have to step her pussy up if she wants to compete. And the first step? Maybe not working with people who have been accused of sexual assault. But hey, that’s just my two cents.
