Apparently Katy Perry and the AFL were stuck in a bit of a stalemate over the “Dark Horse” singer’s Grand Final performance.
The AFL announced Perry’s 2024 AFL Grand Final performance back in July, and there was a bit of controversy with The Greens trying to get her removed. It looks like that wasn’t the only ~drama~ going on, with footy journo Tom Morris revealing the AFL’s “extraordinary request” behind the scenes.
Morris claimed on SEN Breakfast that the AFL asked Perry to only play her biggest bops from her discography, you know, like “Teenage Dream”, “I Kissed A Girl”, “Roar” etc. None of this “Woman’s World” business!
Seeing as the singer *just* dropped her new album 143, she pushed back, wanting to play two new singles. She’s gotta get that promo somehow, seeing as public and critical opinion of 143 is uhh… not good.
According to Morris, the two camps came to the decision that Perry will be allowed to play one new song. It’s probably for the best, Katy! Let’s try and sweep this album under the rug as much as possible.
AFL legends Nathan Buckley and Kane Cornes discussed the whole sitch on SEN Breakfast, saying that if the AFL wanted to make demands, they should’ve had it written into her original contract.
“The AFL are saying, ‘We only want your hits. We only want your bangers’,” Cornes said. “We want ‘Roar’, we want ‘Teenager Dream’, we want ‘Firework’. They want all the songs we know and love. And she’s pushed back and said, ‘No, no, I want to play two of my new songs.’
“She’s gone, clearly, ‘I want to promote some of my new music’.”
Buckley said that the AFL kinda stuffed up here by not specifying which songs they wanted her to play in the first place.
“I reckon if they wanted [a say in the set list], they should have written it into the contract. It’s too late now to ask her something if it’s not written into the contract. If in fact it is, then Katy, you’re just going to have to come to the party,” Buckley said.
“She strikes me as someone who would push back. She would be a bit of trouble. You tell me to do ‘A’ and I’ll do ‘B’ kind of thing.”
It’s not known how much the AFL forked out to secure such a big superstar for the Grand Final, but The Herald Sun estimated it would be around $5 million.
In her announcement back in July, she sounded genuinely stoked to be back coming Down Under to perform for her Aussie fans.
“I’m so excited to be back in Australia and back at the mighty MCG to perform in front of 100,000 of the best and loudest fans in the world at this year’s Toyota AFL Grand Final. See you in September Oi Oi Oi!” she wrote.
The AFL Grand Final takes place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday 28 September, 2024, and will see the Sydney Swans battle out against the Brisbane Lions. Surely the Lions will be hoping Perry whips out “Roar”.
