Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom's relationship - In-N-Out meeting to temporary split

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom have been together for more than half a decade, with the couple having met at an awards ceremony that they both attended some years ago.

The singer-songwriter, 38, and the actor, 46, went on to pursue a relationship and they have since got engaged, as well as them having expanded their family more recently.

Things haven't necessarily been easy though, with Orlando - whose credits include Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean films - saying they've had "ups and downs".

Ahead of Katy performing at King Charles III's Coronation concert this weekend, we've taken a look back at her and Orlando's relationship since meeting seven years ago.

First interaction

The couple are understood to have first met at the Golden Globe Awards in 2016, with them having both presented awards at the event which was held in Beverly Hills.

Katy spoke about their first interaction during an audition on American Idol a few years ago, saying they had "met" over fast food chain In-N-Out Burger at the ceremony.

She recalled: "I had my security guard grab 10 [burgers] and all of a sudden I see [Orlando's] hand. He wasn't even sitting at our table – he just swoops in and he grabs [one]".

The singer shared further details whilst on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2019, recalling: "[Orlando] stole one off my table. I was sitting with Denzel Washington and he took it."

She continued on the show: "I was like 'Wait who ... oh you're so hot. Fine, take it.' And then I saw him at a party and I was like 'How are those onions resting on your molars?'."

Orlando himself recalled the evening during an interview with the Mirror in 2020, saying: "I stood on the stage, gazing out at the audience [...] She was wearing this beautiful pink dress and I was just like 'Wow. I think that's Katy Perry;."

The actor suggested he had been "hungry" and, after noticing the burgers arrive, asked Denzel if he could have one. "[After Denzel agreed] I took one and winked at Katy."

He said they enjoyed "chatting and dancing" at a party later in the evening, and subsequently embarked on a "rather remarkable journey" together in the years since then.

"[It] has not by any means been a Hollywood love story that you might want to hear about. It's taken its own course and gone on its own roller coaster of ups and downs," he said.

Temporary break

Katy and Orlando are said to have dated for a period in 2016, before reportedly breaking up in early 2017. She spoke about their temporary break in an interview last year.

She said on the Dear Chelsea podcast that they broke up after Orlando returned from the Hoffman Process, which is a week-long retreat that addresses behavioural patterns.

"He came back after going and wasn't leaning into all of my bulls*** and so it was boring. It became boring," she said, adding that she decided to end their relationship.

Katy said that she went on to have the "worst year" of her life, for various reasons, and recalled having later attended the week-long Hoffman Process herself.

"You have no cell phone and you just go kind of deep through different exercises with other people actually, which is great because they trigger you the whole time and then you work through those triggers," she commented.

She added about the experience: "You get to discover why you have these patterns and habits and where they're coming from [...] It profoundly changed my life. "

Engagement

The couple reconciled in around 2018 and the following year they got engaged on Valentine's Day, with Katy having shared the proposal with Jimmy Kimmel in 2019.

She recalled her and Orlando getting into a helicopter after having a meal, adding that she was given a note in which he'd "written down everything he wanted to say".

Katy said it was planned as a distraction while he got the ring out of his pocket, though she said things didn't go to plan and champagne seemingly went "everywhere".

She said the ring box was too big for his pocket, adding: "It rips his [pocket] and his elbow goes into the champagne". She said the proposal was still "really sweet" though.

Family life

The couple later welcomed their daughter Daisy, now two, in 2020 after having announced the pregnancy in the video for Katy's single Never Worn White earlier that year.

Katy and Orlando are particularly private over their daughter, though have shared some insights into their family life since her arrival during the Covid-19 pandemic.

This has included him documenting having decorated their daughter's room. Katy was heard calling him "the dad of the year" in footage from the renovation project.

Their family also includes Orlando's son Flynn, 12, whom he shares with his ex-wife Miranda Kerr, 40. The former couple co-parent their son and remain on good terms.

Katy has spoken about her relationship with Miranda. She said at an event earlier this year: "I'm so grateful for our modern blended family. It's like I gained another sister".

Her fiancé Orlando told Access Hollywood a few months ago: "It sometimes can be really challenging [but] ultimately it's just about evolving into a place of gratitude."

The actor further commented about the dynamic: "I'm super grateful that we get to co-parent and I've got two beautiful kids. I'm very blessed and everyone gets along".

Couple's therapy

Katy spoke about couple's therapy whilst on the Dear Chelsea podcast last year, saying at the time that she and fiancé Orlando have had "a lot of success" with it.

Discussing relationships with host Chelsea Handler, she said that partners "usually see your best and a lot of your worst sides" because they are "there to be your mirrors".

She added: "Orlando and I do couple's therapy, and we love it because it just keeps us in tune, and the resentment can get really strong when you're both working hard.

"When you want to come back to being normal in a domesticated world where you have a child and stuff like that, you have to really learn how to be kind of different out there in the big and in the small. And so we've had a lot of success with that couple's therapy."

And Katy said in a recent Instagram post: "[Our] initials are O.K. We continuously put in the work to make sure they aren't K.O. Find yourself a partner that will go down to the mat with you and get back up every time".
