1.5 million people tuned in to watch Katie Taylor defeat Amanda Serrano in the most viewed fight in the history of female professional boxing.
The fight was watched in over 170 countries and is now the most watched boxing event in history to be headlined by two female fighters.
The figures were released by DAZN, who broadcast the fight, and proves that the hype surrounding the fight was fully justified.
“Everyone was talking about this fight being the biggest in women’s boxing history," said Taylor.
"But I think it actually exceeded everything that people were talking about. This was a special, special moment. I think that both myself and Amanda have broken down so many barriers in the last few years in our sport. I love my sport and I want to keep making history.”
Shay Segev, CEO of DAZN said, “Saturday was a triumph for women’s boxing and for DAZN,"
"Promoting women’s sport is central to our mission – far beyond being part of our social impact agenda, we have always seen it as a real commercial opportunity for DAZN and Saturday’s fight confirmed that.
The fight’s incredible viewing figures and new subscriber numbers are evidence of widespread popularity and will move the conversation in the right direction."
The news will come as a welcome boost to fans hoping for the rematch to take place in Croke Park. One can only imagine what kind of numbers Taylor v Serrano II would do if held in a packed stadium in Dublin.
