Katie Taylor says win over Amanda Serrano would eclipse Olympic gold in career achievements

Katie Taylor would rank a win over Amanda Serrano in April above her Olympic gold medal from 2012.

The Irish boxer shot to superstardom with her groundbreaking win at the London games, and has become one of boxing's most important fighters as an undisputed champion in the paid ranks.

And both she and Serrano are set to make history when they square off for the undisputed lightweight title in the main event at Madison Square Garden on April 30.

Taylor played a key role in getting women's boxing into the Olympics for the 2012 tournament, achieving a childhood dream that seemed impossible in the process.

But after securing a seven-figure payday for a monumental clash with Serrano; dubbed 'the biggest fight in women's boxing history,' she believes a win would be her greatest accomplishment.

"The Olympic gold is always very special," Taylor told Mirror Fighting at a press conference in London tonight.

"But I think this moment will be the biggest moment of my career so far".

Taylor and Serrano are considered by many to be the No.1 and No.2 pound-for-pound female boxers in the world, and ticket sales have broken records at the historic New York venue.

As the first event to be headlined by two women in a combat sport in 'the Garden', Taylor and Serrano have already proven their draw with the second biggest pre-sale in history, and just a handful of tickets left already.

The event is co-promoted by YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul and renowned Matchroom Boxing supremo Eddie Hearn, the first time the pair have worked together since the social media star's debut in 2020.

And Taylor, an icon of women's sport worldwide, is thankful to have the enigmatic Paul backing the fight, and bringing his tens of millions of fans along for the ride.

"I didn't think that Jake Paul would be involved in boxing at all," Taylor said of the 25-year-old. "I'm so glad that he is involved.

"He had a huge part to play in making this fight happen - it was scheduled a couple of times before and fell through those times.

"I'm so glad this fight is over the line now and I have both Jake Paul and Eddie Hearn to thank for it."

Paul is known for his brash, cocky personality that has rubbed many in the combat sports world the wrong way - as, to a lesser extent, is Hearn.

But Taylor is the polar opposite, insisting that while there is a competitive rivalry between her and Serrano, she won't be getting into heated verbal spars with the seven-division world champion any time soon.

"I don't think there's any trash talking going on," Taylor insisted. "I have the utmost respect for anybody who steps into the ring.

"But I do believe that I am going to be victorious on April 30 - I'm not one for trash talking and I'm not going to start now."

Taylor and Serrano will now have around two-and-a-half months away from one another after an intensive worldwide media tour that started in New York last week.
