Katie Taylor pays tribute to boxing giants Laila Ali and Christy Martin after Amanda Serrano fight

Katie Taylor has paid tribute to former fighters Laila Ali and Christy Martin following her Madison Square Garden victory over Amanda Serrano.

The Bray boxer took her professional record to 21-0 last weekend after a split decision win over the Puerto Rican following a fight of the year contender at the iconic New York venue.

Taylor met with Ali, who is Muhammad Ali's daughter, and fellow former world champion Martin backstage after her victory over Serrano.

Paying tribute to them in an Instagram post, the undisputed world lightweight champion wrote: "'If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.' - Isaac Newton."

"These are indeed giant shoulders!"

Martin was full of praise for Taylor following last weekend's bout, describing the 2012 Olympic gold medallist as a true champion.

She said: "That’s a true champion. When they get knocked down, they come back. Of course, she didn’t get knocked down, it is hard to get up.

"But she did, she came back out of the corner and composed herself, especially in the last three rounds. She needed to win those rounds and I think she did."

Martin insisted the fight was right up there with the best female bouts in history.

She added: "Yeah, it has to be right up there as the best. Every round had action, every round had something in it and at one point, Katie Taylor was hurt and I really thought that Serrano was going to stop her. This was about to be over, but with her heart and talent, Katie came right back."
