Katie Price's split from Peter Andre led to her ‘downfall’ and ‘mental health’ issues

Katie Price's family has said her "downfall” and “mental health [issues]” were caused by the backlash she received after splitting from ex-husband Peter Andre.

The former glamour model is to be the focus of Channel 4 documentary, Katie Price: Trauma and Me, in which she opens up about living with depression and PTSD. Katie’s mum Amy and Stepdad Paul say her problems began in 2009 with her divorce from Peter, 49, who she met while appearing in I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here in 2004.

In the documentary, Stepdad Paul said he believes Katie’s “downfall” started after her split from the Mysterious Girl singer. He said: "From that moment, all she got was backlash, backlash, backlash and I find it quite hurtful.

“I’m not saying she’s an angel, but I think she deserves better. I can understand why she’s got mental health [issues]."

Speaking to New! magazine last year, Katie revealed she never wanted to split from Peter as she believes in "getting married and staying with them forever." He is now with NHS doctor Emily MacDonagh, who he married after a three-year relationship.

Katie's new documentary begins shortly after she was involved in a car crash in September last year, for which she was ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work for drink-driving and driving while disqualified. She was previously banned from driving on five separate occasions and narrowly avoided jail for the incident.

However, Katie said her mental health struggles started years before the crash, when a combination of depression and PTSD left her feeling suicidal. She said: "I hit a severe depression a couple of years ago, depression on top of PTSD.

“I was suicidal, I didn’t want to be here. When I’m having a down moment [my demon] comes out.

“But I’ve got to keep it at bay because it knows. It got me one time when I was weak and it can always be there, it’s controlling it."

She also revealed the only thing that kept her going after a suicide attempt was her children, Harvey, 20, Junior, 17, Princess, 15, Jett, nine, and Bunny, eight. She added: “All I saw was the kids’ faces and I never want that to happen again."

Katie Price: Trauma and Me is due to air on Thursday, September 8 at 9pm on Channel 4.
