The television watchdog has confirmed that it received 62 complaints over the comment in response to the panellist’s reaction to a TikTok video showing a mother’s themed home interiors.
Late last month, the 39-year-old and her co-stars Kaye Adams, 60, Judi Love, 42, and Nadia Swahala, 58 discussed whether parents should impose their lifestyle choices on their children.
The debate, which aired during an episode on December 22, was sparked after a clip showing a family home inspired by Netflix’s hit show Wednesday.
In the viral TikTok video, viewers saw mum Rebecca Hardy documenting a “day in the life of a gothic baby” and showing the home’s Addams Family-inspired decor.
After viewing the clip on the show, Piper shared her frank opinion on Hardy’s interior choices, saying it was giving her “satanic vibes” and “bad energy”.
She said during the segment: “I don’t like that interior. It’s all black and dark. Babies don’t like that.
“I’m just going to put it out there it’s giving me satanic vibes, it’s giving me bad energy, it’s toxic, I don’t like it and also, it’s a baby.
“The cots are a tomb. You can’t put your baby in a grave.”
At the time, the TV presenter’s comments sparked uproar on social media, with one viewer notably tweeting, “Goths are some of the nicest people, often more accepting of others and super friendly.
“Shame on you @loosewomen, especially @KatiePiper_ for spewing rubbish on such a platform, encouraging ridiculous stereotypes about a wonderful community.”
Following the backlash online, the television regulator has confirmed that it received 62 complaints over the comments.
The Standard has contacted Katie Piper’s rep and Ofcom for comment.
The mother who posted the video has since addressed the comments in a follow-up and insisted that the video was a “skit”, even showing that her house is not all “black and dark”.
She said in her response TikTok: “At least the gothic nursery has depth and colour and warmth”.
Hardy, who is married to former WWE American wrestler Matthew Moore Hardy, went on to criticise “beige moms” who “do everything monochromatically with beige and cream [colours]”.
Adding: “I don’t understand how this is any different from someone decorating their baby’s nursery in monochromatic pink or monochromatic blue.”
