New York Governor Kathy Hochul will reportedly refrain from removing NYC Mayor Eric Adams from office despite allegations of "quid pro quo" with the Trump administration, different outlets reported on Thursday. Instead, she is set to announce state and city bills increasing oversight of the mayor's office.
Hochul is set to announce she won't use her power to remove Adams on Thursday. She will ask state lawmakers to pass the bills when they return to Albany next week. The New York Times reported that the governor will criticize Adams' behavior and claim the initiatives will help hold him accountable.
Measures include creating a new state deputy inspector general dedicated to New York City; establishing a fund for the city comptroller, public advocate and City Council speaker to hire outside counsel to sue the federal government if the mayor won't do it, as well as more funds for the state comptroller, the outlet detailed. The mayor would also be barred from firing the head of the Department of Investigation without approval of the state inspector general.
Adams was accused of engaging in a "quid pro quo" with the Trump administration, with the latter getting its DOJ to drop corruption charges against him in exchange for increased immigration enforcement in the city.
The announcement triggered a slew of resignations from federal officials, with former federal prosecutor Danielle Sassooncalling the decision "a breathtaking and dangerous precedent to reward Adams's opportunistic and shifting commitments on immigration." At least six other prosecutors resigned as well.
President Donald Trump downplayed the concerns, claiming the departing officials were holdovers from the Biden administration and would have been replaced anyway. "When you say, resign, they're going to be gone anyway," Trump said.
Adams has denied all claims and refused to step down. Now, as he will remain in power, he will likely face tough challenges from both Democrats and Republicans in the June elections.
