Kathy Burke's praised as The Jeremy Vine Show deletes controversial tweet after her reply

The internet is celebrating Kathy Burke and her politics amid the backlash to Amanda Holden 's tribute to Paul O'Grady.

Britain's Got Talent judge Amanda sparked fury earlier this week, as she said she loved Lily Savage, aka Paul, as they apparently weren't 'woke' - despite the late star being known for championing the LGBTQ+ community and his hatred of the Conservative Party.

In the wake of Amanda's comments, many social media users have been revisiting Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie star Kathy's comments about social justice and her plea for children to 'be woke'.

In a recent episode of her Channel 4 documentary series Kathy Burke: Growing Up, the much-loved comic explored the topics that matter to young people today.

After chatting with a climate activist, podcast host Kathy, 58, declared: "I think activism is a part of being young, and it’s important that the young show us what their p***ed off about.

"It’s not a fad and it’s not ‘wokeism’," the star continued, mimicking large air quotes. "Can I just say, that gets on my f***ing nerves.

"They’re calling you ‘woke’ if you call out bad things, basically. If you’re not racist, you’re woke. If you’re not homophobic, oh, you’re woke. Be woke, kids. Be woke. Be wide awake and f***ing call it out."

As fans on Twitter celebrated Kathy on Friday, the outspoken star took aim at presenter Jeremy Vine and his personal interpterion of the word woke.

Quote-tweeting a clip from a recent episode of The Jeremy Vine Show, which saw Jeremy and others discuss the word woke and its meaning, Kathy furiously added: "'It’s come to mean something else' from Vine there. No it hasn’t, it’s just been hijacked by thicko’s and patronising old white men."

The Jeremy Vine Show's Twitter account has since deleted the original tweet (Twitter)

"He probably thinks the rules of the road are 'woke'," one fan replied to the star - seemingly referring to Vine's passion for cycling.

Following Kathy's quote-tweet and scathing comment, the original tweet from The Jeremy Vine show containing the clip has been deleted.

"God I f**ing love Kathy Burke. Anyone who uses the word woke as a pejorative should be instantly dismissed as a human being," one fan tweeted as the internet praised Kathy.

Actor Robert Lindsay added: "Never really knew what “Woke” meant until a little bit of clarity from the great @kathyBurke."

Prior to Kathy's tweet about The Jeremy Vine show, Jemma Forte - who often appears on the Channel 5 show - took to her Twitter page to share the clip of Kathy encouraging kids to be woke.

She captioned the footage: "All hail @KathyBurke. If anyone ‘accuses’ you of being woke, say thank you and feel proud. Giving a shit is being weaponised.

"Caring about social injustice shouldn’t feel like an insult. Go woke or go home."

Elsewhere on Twitter, another fan of Kathy's declared: "It is time we reclaimed the description 'woke'. It refers to those with eyes to see and the courage to act to enable change.

"Being woke means being a decent human, not a fucking fascist or climate change denier. But the best description of what being woke means is by Kathy Burke."
