Kate reacts to new Princess of Wales title with touching nod to Diana

The Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge has reacted to her new royal title of the Princess of Wales as she "appreciates the history associated with this role," according to royal source.

During his first address to the nation, following the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles III announced that his daughter in law Kate, would inherit the Princess of Wales title, with William becoming Prince of Wales. Kate, 40, will become the first person to use the title since William's mother, the late Princess Diana.

He said: "As my Heir, William now assumes the Scottish titles which have meant so much to me. He succeeds me as Duke of Cornwall and takes on the responsibilities for the Duchy of Cornwall which I have undertaken for more than five decades. Today, I am proud to create him Prince of Wales, Tywysog Cymru, the country whose title I have been so greatly privileged to bear during so much of my life and duty.

"With Catherine beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the centre ground where vital help can be given."

Sharing Kate and William's reaction, a royal source said: "The couple are focussed on deepening the trust and respect of the people of Wales over time. The Prince and Princess of Wales will approach their roles in the modest and humble way they’ve approached their work previously

"The new Princess of Wales appreciates the history associated with this role but will understandably want to look to the future as she creates her own path.”

Princess Diana was handed the Princess of Wales title when she married Charles in 1981. Queen Consort Camilla could have used the title after she married Charles in 2005, she opted not to out of respect for the late royal.

Within minutes of Charles' speech, Kate and William's official Twitter account @kensingtonroyal changed to reflect the changes. The bio now reads: "The official account of The Prince and Princess of Wales and The Royal Foundation, based at Kensington Palace."
