Kate, Princess of Wales, announces she has finished chemotherapy in moving family video

The Princess of Wales has announced that she has completed her course of preventative chemotherapy following her cancer diagnosis.

In a video statement, she conveyed cautious optimism about resuming a limited number of public engagements by the end of the year, although insiders from Kensington Palace emphasised that her return to royal duties would be gradual, with her recovery taking priority.

No precise timeline has been provided, but those close to the Princess report that her treatment has been largely successful, and she is showing encouraging signs of progress in her recovery journey.

The Princess expressed profound gratitude for the overwhelming support she received during her treatment, which she described as “incredibly tough”.

She added that she had been “blown away” by the kindness shown to her by the public and her close circle during this challenging time.

She spoke in a statement recorded and published as part of a intimate family video, shot in August in Norfolk where the Waleses have a family home. It included images of Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis playing in fields or enjoying a game of cards with their parents under a tree. She said: “As the summer comes to an end, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment.

“The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant, and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown. The cancer journey is complex, scary, and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you.”

She reflected on how the experience had brought her face to face with vulnerabilities she had not previously considered and shared her gratitude for the simple joys of life, especially love and support.

“Doing what I can to stay cancer-free is now my focus. Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long, and I must continue to take each day as it comes.

“I am, however, looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months when I can.”

The princess will be returning to a lighter schedule of public engagements for the rest of the year to allow for a continued focus on her recovery.

She has already begun working from home, focusing on projects such as her advocacy for early childhood development.

The Princess concluded her message with a note of solidarity to others on their cancer journeys:

“To all those who are continuing their own cancer journey – I remain with you, side by side, hand in hand. Out of darkness, can come light, so let that light shine bright.”

Kensington Palace and the Wales family have also expressed immense gratitude for the kind wishes they have received during this period and continue to appreciate the media’s respect for the Princess’s privacy.

Kate revealed in March that she was being treated for cancer. She began a course of preventative chemotherapy in late February. She has not revealed what type of cancer she is being treated for.

She has been out of sight of the public for much of this year. Engagements it is speculated she could take part in this year as part of her gradual return to public life could include Remembrance events in November and her annual Christmas carol concert.
