Kate Middleton shares unseen family snap of late Queen with her great-grandchildren

The Princess of Wales has shared a heartwarming unseen snap of the late Queen surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren during her final weeks.

The snap, taken by Kate last summer at Balmoral, shows the former monarch on a sofa with the young royals all smiles next to their beloved 'Gan Gan'.

On the sofa next to her is her oldest great-grandchild Savannah Phillips, the eldest daughter of Peter Phillips, as well as Mia Tindall, who cradles her baby brother Lucas.

Behind them stands Lena Tindall, the middle child of Zara and Mike Tindall, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Isla Phillips and Prince Louis. Standing tall at the back are the Queen's youngest grandchildren Lady Louise Windsor and James, the new Earl of Wessex - the son and daughter of the now Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.

The Queen's other great-grandchildren who are missing from the photo are Prince Archie, Princess Lilibet, August Brooksbank - the son of Princess Eugenie- and Princess Beatrice's daughter Sienna.

It echoes another snap taken by Kate years earlier featuring many of the same children with the Queen as well as the late Prince Philip.

The family snap was shared by Kate and husband Prince William as today would have been Her late Majesty's 97th birthday - and is her first since her death last September.

Each year, the late Queen would spend her summers at her beloved Scottish Highlands estate and she would invite her family to stay with her, where they would enjoy long walks, family barbecues and picnics.

Last year, she spent her final weeks at the estate, carrying out her last duty appointing former Prime Minster Liz Truss before dying two days later on September 8.

In a tribute to his grandmother in the days after her death, William said: "My wife has had twenty years of her guidance and support. My three children have got to spend holidays with her and create memories that will last their whole lives.

"She was by my side at my happiest moments. And she was by my side during the saddest days of my life. I knew this day would come, but it will be some time before the reality of life without Grannie will truly feel real."

The release of the never-before-seen snap comes after King Charles also shared a beautiful image of the late Queen in a poignant tribute on a bittersweet day for the Royal Family.

It shows her with a beaming smile clutching a bouquet of flowers during an outing in Edinburgh just last June. It was taken during the annual Holyrood Week at the Ceremony of the Keys, which was a mainstay in her calendar.

Alongside the photo, a message read: "Today we remember the incredible life and legacy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, on what would have been her 97th birthday."

And royal fans were quick to offer their own tributes to the Queen on the anniversary of her birth.

One wrote: "Happy Heavenly Birthday Ma'am, thank you for all your sacrifice and service to us."

Another said: "The most wonderful lady - missed so much and loved always."

The late Queen was born on April 21, 1926, in a central London townhouse located at 17 Bruton Street in Mayfair.

The future monarch's parents, the Duke and Duchess of York, had moved to the property belonging to her maternal grandmother just a few weeks before her birth.

Last year she marked her 96th birthday, which turned out to be her last, with a drive around her beloved Sandringham estate.

In addition, a portrait of the beaming monarch was released showing her standing proudly in between two horses wearing green coat with the colour a subtle nod to her beloved Philip.

The poignant date comes just three weeks before her son, King Charles will be crowned at Westminster Abbey.

His Coronation will take place on May 6 - almost 70 years after the late Queen's Coronation in 1953.
