Kate Middleton's university nickname caught William's attention and led to breakfast invite

University is a time to study, but it's also a time to have fun with friends - and the Duchess of Cambridge did just that.

Kate enrolled at the University of St Andrews in Fife, Scotland, where she studied the history of art.

And while she has never been a big drinker, she threw herself into Freshers' Week - a university tradition of welcoming new students with a week of nights out and partying - and earned herself an impressive nickname.

Royal author Katie Nicholl shares stories of Kate's youth in her book Kate: The Future Queen, during which she claims Kate had "hectic week of partying, meeting her 'university parents - older pupils who were in charge of looking after freshers - finding her way around town and settling into her residence hall.

"Kate soon found her way around and was often seen relaxing in the common room, curled up in an armchair, a cup of tea in hand, either reading newspaper articles her father rather touchingly mailed to her or getting to know her fellow hall mates."

Prince William also studied at the university and arrived the following week.

He moved into the flat above Kate's and it didn't take him long to notice the stunning brunette - probably because of the nickname she was given by her peers.

According to Katie, she had been dubbed 'Beautiful Kate' by the end of Freshers' Week.

She writes: "She was initially more reserved than many of the other young women, but her natural beauty was apparent.

"Tanned from a recent holiday in Barbados with her parents, fit from regular early morning run or swim, and dressed in her comfortable Hennes jeans, fitted sweater and signature cowboy boots, she radiated an outer freshness and an inner confidence."

William reportedly worked up the courage to ask her to join him and his friends for breakfast one day.

Of the moment, royal author Tom Quinn said: "One of the funny stories is he was so desperate to meet her that as he walked towards her, he apparently tripped and said, 'Oh that's a terrible start, you're going to think I'm a complete clot."

Walks to class brought the pair together and it wasn't long before their friendship turned into something more.

This year, the pair will be celebrating their 11th wedding anniversary, surrounded by their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
