Kate Middleton almost caused Prince William to make huge gaffe at their wedding

Later this week, it will be exactly 11 years since the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said "I do" as they married at Westminster Abbey.

The wedding was a grand affair with the Abbey packed with guests and almost two billion people watching the ceremony around the world on TV.

So it would have been natural for both Prince William and Kate, who looked stunning in her Alexander McQueen bridal gown, to feel nervous.

And those nerves seemingly almost got the better of William when it came to one important part of the ceremony.

As he went to place Kate's wedding ring on her finger, there was an awkward few seconds where he failed to fit the ring on her hand.

After a seemingly long struggle, he finally managed to do it and they were officially man and wife.

But it turns out the struggle may have actually been down to Kate.

According to the Mail On Sunday at the time, Kate asked the ring to be made in a size smaller.

A source explained: "She had her engagement ring resized because she’d lost weight and didn’t want the same problem with her wedding ring slipping off.

"It has now become a subject of amusement to her and William."

However, there was no struggle for Kate in returning the favour on the big day - that's because William does not wear a wedding ring.

It was revealed just before his marriage that William would not wear a ring.

Speaking at the time of his wedding, a Palace insider said: "He’s not one for jewellery. He’s never worn any. He decided he didn’t want to wear one now. It’s all down to personal preference."

In contrast, William's brother Prince Harry can often be seen fiddling with his wedding ring at official engagements.

His ring is a platinum band with a textured finish that is made by jewellers Cleave and Company.

His wife Meghan Markle's wedding ring is also made by Cleave and Company and is fashioned from a piece of Welsh Gold - as is tradition for royal brides.

She wears it alongside her engagement ring, which consists of two diamonds from Princess Diana's collection and one from Botswana.
