Kate Garraway surprises fans with rare selfie alongside husband Derek Draper after hospital trip

Kate Garraway both surprised and delighted fans as she posted a rare selfie alongside her husband Derek Draper after he recently returned to hospital. The presenter told her Good Morning Britain co-host Adil Ray and viewers on Friday that she'd be spending her weekend planting a tree.

Quickly turning in his seat, her co-star replied: "Well that was a nice handbrake turn there." But Kate reassured her co-host that there was a reason for her comment as she expertly segued into a segment with weather presenter Laura Tobin.

Explaining why, Kate, 55, said: "There's a reason. It may take some time to work out what it is but it always makes sense in my head. I'm planting a tree this weekend with some of Derek's family who are coming down so it's going to be a lovely moment planting a fruit tree and Laura says we should definitely be doing that."

And on Sunday (April 23), the TV and radio star shared an update on social media as she posted a string of gardening snaps with the final image featuring her husband and their two children, Darcey, 17, and Billy, 13.

"Funny how it was just grandad & I for the digging & planting & then suddenly everyone appears when up!!" Kate typed alongside the post. "Crowning a very special weekend with the Drapers (Aunty Sue & grandma you are here in spirit) by planting a magnolia tree for #earthday." She added: "Happy Sunday everyone."

And her celebrity pals and fans rushed to comment with fellow GMB star Susanna Reid writing: "Everything about these is gorgeous," alongside a red heart emoji. Former Geordie Shore star and Queen of the I'm A Celebrity jungle Vicky Pattison said: "Derek looks amazing."

@sarah_l0710 commented: "Ah such a lovely photo and I know it may not be the case but Derek looks really well." @gavinclarke24 shared: "How absolutely wonderful to see a pic of Derek, and looking so well too. Has made my weekend this post." @tammysays replied: "Literally a 'wow moment' Derek looks amazing! Absolutely priceless pic of you all, but so amazing to have you both at the forefront."

@brightonmoves.uk posted: "Absolutely love this post, positive, encouraging, aspiring just gorgeous - thank you." @strudle_doodle typed: "What a lovely photo of everyone. Really put a smile on my face seeing Derek smiling." @hollnewbs added: "Wow these are inspiring pictures !!! Well done to you all, and especially Derek who looks really well!!!"

It comes after Kate and Derek enjoyed a rare night out last week when the couple and their two children headed to London's O2 arena to see Sir Elton John on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.

While on stage, the superstar singer told fans in the crowd that Kate and her former political advisor husband Derek had endured "really tough times" following Derek's Covid ordeal which began in early 2020. "They’re inspiring," the 76-year-old said. "They’ve never given up and I’m so thrilled they’re here, I can’t believe they are here."

He added: "I want to dedicate this song to the people I mentioned before, but especially to you guys." Sir Elton then sang Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me for the couple. Days after the memorable moment, Kate shared a video to Instagram after she finally tracked down someone who managed to capture 76-year-old Sir Elton's dedication.

"… so this was a moment. Finally found someone who had actually filmed it rather than just burst into joyous tears as we did!!!" She shared how Derek was back in hospital for treatment and said there was a "long road ahead," but wrote: "#eltonjohn & @davidfurnish you gave the kids & Derek a moment that we will never forget and has lifted their spirits again to feel anything is possible. Thank you for your inspiring music and huge heart."
