Kate Garraway appeared on ITV's Loose Women on Thursday, June 8 to provide a health update on her husband Derek Draper and share a very special announcement. Thr 56-year-old has documented Derek's journey after he contracted Covid-19 in March 2020 and was hospitalised for 13 months as a result.
The former political lobbyist has faced a series of health battles since, including contracting sepsis last year. As Kate joined the panel today they played raw clips of an emotional Kate during filming for the documentaries, Finding Derek and Caring for Derek.
"When you are watching those documentaries, what is it like for you looking back at that time of your life?" Charlene White asked.
Reminiscing, Kate said: "It's a strange one really because I think the last time I was on the show was the beginning of 2020, just back from the [I'm A Celebrity] jungle. Derek and I were going to renew our wedding vows. It was very happy. And then in a matter of weeks we were in this unfolding drama. It feels like forever ago, and just yesterday," Kate said, before adding: "I'm still living the scenes that you see in the documentary."
Linda Robson later asked if Derek could communicate, to which Kate said: "It is very much a whisper and I don't think we are necessarily going to have a conversation but you get fantastic moments where he will suddenly... This is so silly but Billy had a new basketball and he was bouncing it and suddenly Derek asked 'Is that a new ball?'.
"We all just went 'Ah'... and Billy went 'Yes, yes it is, it is' and he [Derek] said 'It's nice'. Seeing him able is unbelievable, it is something you take for granted.
"But to have him be able to interact in that way and then Billy was in tears and they were hugging. It's things like that, that really lift you up and then the next day he was completely still."
Kate also made her special announcement, revealing she would be doing a third documentary and had almost finished writing a new book. She said: "I've decided to do another documentary. I know everbody has had enough of me.
"There's two things really, I've written a book, nearly finished, which is coming out in September. It was suspposed to be out last year but I just couldn't complete it, everything was too much."
Kate explained that the third documentary does not yet have a name but has said she wants it to focus on carers. She told the panel: "There are millions of people across the country caring out of love that are keeping our country going. We have got to find a way of making caring a priority."
