Kate Garraway says husband Derek Draper is 'making good progress' after massive setback

Kate Garraway has revealed that her beloved husband, Derek Draper, is making good progress after suffering a massive setback in his health after a sepsis diagnosis.

The Good Morning Britain host, 55, was nominated and won a National Television Award for her documentary about her family life as her husband battles the long-term effects of Covid was 'bittersweet'.

Derek's devoted wife was nominated for Best Authored Documentary for her ITV programme Caring For Derek, up against Julia Bradbury's Breast Cancer and Me, Tom Parker's Inside My Head, Paddy and Christine McGuinness' Our Family and Autism and Katie Price : What Harvey Did Next.

Ahead of tonight's special ceremony, Kate offered an update on her beloved husband, revealing that he's 'making good progress' following his most recent hospital dash.

Kate said that Derek had gone through an 'acute crisis' as she confessed he is still in hospital.

However, the Good Morning Britain star said that Derek is continuing to fight to the best of his ability.

"Derek will get the message tonight. He is making good progress after having a massive setback," Kate told.

"He fights on with an extraordinary spirit, thank goodness," she added.

Last year, Kate won the award for the first programme about her family's life after her husband, former political adviser Derek Draper, spent a year in hospital being treated for coronavirus.

Reflecting on how she felt to be nominated again, she told the PA news agency on the red carpet: "It's bittersweet, because you wouldn't really want to be in a position to be making that documentary because it wouldn't be a situation that you would choose.

"However, there were many nights when we feared Derek will be taken from us completely. So the fact that he fights on so incredibly, and we have the chance to care for him, is a fantastic thing.

"And to have the opportunity to celebrate the amazing work carers do, the professional carers, the millions of unpaid carers all across the country that are looking after loved ones, I think is a fantastic thing."

The TV presenter added that her husband has helped her through difficult times as she finds him "inspiring", and the support of the nation has also lifted her.

Kate was supported by her teenage daughter Darcey on the red carpet at the National Television Awards.

The gorgeous pair smiled for the camera, as the mum-of-two wore a gold wrap dress while her teenager daughter wore a stunning floor length red number.

The 2022 NTAs were originally due to take place on September 15 but were put on hold as a mark of respect following the death of the Queen.
