Kate Garraway says 'entire' ITV team carried Derek into 'emotional' new wellbeing garden

Kate Garraway has said the “entire” ITV crew carried Derek Draper down into their family garden, which featured in the Love Your Garden documentary earlier this week.

The Good Morning Britain host documented the work she had been doing in her garden to help her family's wellbeing, after Derek was left with serious health issues following his battle with Covid-19.

Derek spent months in hospital, before finally being able to come home, but he still requires round the clock care, which is partially provided by Kate and her two children.

The 54-year-old referred to the Love Your Garden programme during Thursday’s instalment of Good Morning Britain, joking to co-hosts Ben Shephard and Susanna Reid that she realises there’s “a lot of Garraway around at the moment”, fresh off the broadcast of her Caring for Derek documentary.

Kate said she filmed the project last year, but it was “held up” by Covid-19, adding: “I did it throughout the season last year - so that was Derek towards the end of last summer.”

The Life Stories host said their lift in the garden still isn’t working, so the “entire” Love Your Garden team carried Derek into the flowery wonderland.

She added: “Big thanks to their muscle. He was able to get outside. It was amazing.

“It was one of the things we would talk about when he was in the coma, saying we're going to get you back into your chair in the garden.”

She continued: “Knowing this was airing, I did have an absolutely fevered weekend with my dad in case someone flew over. I did a lot of debris clearing, but of course it's the wrong time of year for a lot of those plants.”

Speaking about how tough it is for her and the family with Derek's condition during the programme, Kate explained on Love Your Garden: “The garden needs to be more than a space to go into. I really want to grow some plants to improve our health and wellbeing.”

As she began work on her garden, Kate admitted she was excited about the prospect.

“I love the idea that there's plants that look good, smell good and do good. I hope it works,” she said, as she started work on her garden, which will feature three different plant beds - one for plants that can be used to make tea, another with medicinal plants, including those with antioxidants and perennials, as well as a separate aromatherapy bed.

“If you look past the initial beauty of the plants, it can give you so much more. I haven’t quite proved you can grow yourself well but I think I’ve definitely learnt you can grow yourself happier,” she said.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
