Kate Garraway's message to fans ahead of new Derek Draper documentary

Kate Garraway has issued a message to her many social media followers ahead of a new documentary that airs on Tuesday.

In March 2020, Kate's family's lives changed forever when her husband Derek Draper contracted coronavirus.

The 54-year-old is now free of the virus but has suffered long-lasting damage to his organs and spent more than a year in hospital.

He remains seriously ill and requires round-the-clock care.

A candid film, Finding Derek, aired on ITV in spring of last year, and earned Kate a National Television Award.

Caring for Derek is the follow-up to the documentary, and begins on ITV this evening.

This time the film joins Kate and the family from the first moments Derek arrives home in April, and in the build-up to Christmas 2021 - a period of considerable upheaval and uncertainty.

Ahead of its launch, Kate has explained why she felt compelled to make the documentary.

Posting on Instagram, she said: "I thought long and hard about letting cameras into our lives again because as with the [first] one, I wanted it to offer more than just sharing what my family has been through.

"I wanted it to also shine a light on issues that I know affect all of you.

"I pray it gives hope to everyone who is battling on with whatever life has thrown at you. The heroes of this documentary are the carers, doctors & nurses who are giving Derek the chance to even try to recover.

"I salute the carers everywhere who fight on for their loved ones. Do let me know what you think. @ITV TONIGHT 9pm"

Fans were quick to respond, with many praising Kate for her bravery.

hwatts2001 said: "Will be watching. Kate, you are an inspiration to many people"

ladyllox said: "This will be a must watch, wishing you and your family nothing but love and positivity x"

kenclasper said: "Our thoughts are with you all, hoping that Derek will really improve and enjoy family life again x"
