Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper 'back in hospital for operation to repair kidney damage'

Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper is said to be back in hospital once again to undergo an operation on his kidneys.

The 55-year-old former political adviser contracted Covid back in March 2020, with the damage from the virus so severe that he was placed in a medically induced coma for several months. Derek was finally able to return home in April 2021 after more than a year in hospital, but still requires daily care and has been in and out of hospital since.

Good Morning Britain star Kate is said to have stayed by her husband’s bedside as he recovered from an operation to repair damage to his kidneys caused by Covid, The Mirror reports . Doctors reportedly reassured Kate that the procedure was a routine one and that there was “no alternative but to operate”, but Derek’s latest hospital visit is nonetheless said to have been a worrying ordeal for the family.

A source told The Sun : "This is another hammer blow for poor Derek. He is giving the fight against Covid his absolute all, but his kidneys have suffered some pretty serious damage. Doctors explained there was no alternative but to operate.

“Of course Kate and the family are worried but she’s been reassured the procedure itself is routine. Everyone has everything crossed, and Kate is being her usual stoical self and keeping everything running, business as usual, on the home front.”

Kate was absent from GMB for three weeks just last month after the family were faced with a “dramatic” development in Derek’s health. Upon her return to the show, the presenter revealed that her husband had contracted “very severe” and “life-threatening” sepsis.

“Unfortunately his kidneys were really badly infected, blocked,” Kate explained on the ITV show at the start of August . “The challenge now is to save them, so that's where we've been for the last three weeks.” The Mirror has contacted a representative for Kate Garraway.
