Kate Garraway reduced to tears after issuing warning after suffering near-malfunction on air

Kate Garraway was overcome with emotion after warning one of Good Morning Britain's guests that she was ready to 'burst into tears' as they congratulated her on receiving her MBE live on the show. Earlier this week the broadcaster was officially awarded her honour by the Prince of Wales after being named in the late Queen's New Years Honours list 2022.

On Wednesday (June 28), Kate headed to Windsor Castle where her MBE was it was handed over to her by Prince William during the latest investiture ceremony. The special moment was witnessed by her husband Derek Draper, who has been battling the damaging effects contracting Covid in March 2020 had on his body.

He was able to join his wife for the special occasion with the help of a carer, named Jake, who has previously appeared on Kate's social media channels, alongside her parents, Gordon and Marilyn Garraway with the group snapped proudly watching on as Kate came face-to-face with Prince William.

Returning to GMB on Thursday (June 29), Kate showcased her award in the studio, scenes of her special moment played out. Her co-host Ben, 48, said: "Ah look at them all in the back shot," referring to Derek and Kate's family, and she confessed: "Ah I know, Derek burst into tears."

She then revealed: "The lovely thing was Prince William said 'how's Derek' and I said 'he's here!' So we turned and saw and then obviously Derek was very tearful and then spoke about Jake [Derek's carer] and gave Jake a wave as well. Prince William said he wanted to go over but he's not allowed to leave the rug. There's a very fancy red and gold carpet that he stands on."

Kate has since returned to GMB on Friday (June 30) and had to admit that the enormity of the last few days, which came after what the TV and radio star described as a 'tough 10 days' following a return to the hospital for Derek.

Kate and co-host Ben had been quizzing Labour MP Wes Streeting when he ended his chat by sharing his joy at seeing Kate collect her honour with former Labour lobbyist Derek by her side. He said the pictures "made my heart burst" before adding: "You really deserve it. It was lovely to see you there and it was lovely to see Derek with you.

"I know I speak not just for all of Derek's friends in the Labour party but right across parliament, if one thing that can unite it all, it was just wonderful to see you there. You absolutely deserve it and to see Derek there smiling and supporting you was just brilliant."

In response, Kate said: "And it's all tribute to the NHS. We come back to the same point. It was wonderful to have our brilliant nurse there, Jake, as well and for the Prince of Wales to acknowledge him made everything."

She added: "Thank you so much. I'm on a bit of a hair trigger emotionally this morning," before Ben interjected and said: "She really is!" Kate went on: "So I could burst into tears at any point. It's all caught up with me but thank you."

And later, a performance from Sam Ryder saw Kate shed a few tears as Ben asked her: "Have you gone?" before she reiterated how emotional she was feeling before saying: "Oh Sam, you've finished me off!"

It came after Kate suffered a near-awkward wardrobe malfunction live on air. It started as Ben outed his co-star, saying: "She just looked at me and she said, 'Well, I’m just not sure my dress is done up and not sure I’m strapped in.'"

Kate hit back: "Well, the director Tom, I’m naming and shaming him, he made me go and change my dress 30 seconds before the show," before joking that her MBE ‘wasn’t worth’ it, laughing: "I can’t even dress myself!"

Ben then explained: "The reason she had to change her dress was because it was strobing, so if you were looking at it first thing it would have made your eyes funny. It’s when the pattern on the dress shakes on the picture."

Kate added: "Holly in wardrobe said it was a small price to play because it was a lovely dress," to which Ben joked: "And now we’ll never know! And now we’ve got the advantage of not being sure if things are done up and if you’re strapped in. So who knows what could happen!" As Kate agreed: "Anything could happen!"
