Kate Garraway had viewers doing double-takes this morning while filling in for Lorraine Kelly. What started as a heartfelt story about her late husband, Derek Draper, turned into an unexpected on-air blunder that quickly became the talk of the morning.
While discussing the trend of women keeping their maiden names, Kate shared a personal memory of how Derek reacted to her decision to take his surname. She recalled being asked, “Garraway or Rumsey?” and replying, “Definitely Kate Rumsey.” She meant to say “Draper,” but she didn’t realise the slip immediately, reported OK! magazine.
In a moment of realisation, Kate gasped, “Rumsey?! My god, that’s my first husband, I’m in chaos this morning!” The slip-up triggered laughter across the studio, and she quickly corrected herself and apologised for the mix-up before moving on.
Kate and her first husband, Ian Rumsey, were married between 1998 and 2002 after meeting at Meridian TV, where he was her boss. Their marriage ended under a cloud of speculation about a possible affair — something Ian has always denied. At the time, Kate had said, “It’s always terribly sad when a marriage comes to an end. I’m disappointed that what’s a very private matter has been brought into the public domain.”
Despite the past, Ian later went on to become the boss of Good Morning Britain in 2010 — a twist of fate that surely adds another layer of awkwardness to Kate’s accidental name drop.
Two years after her split with Ian, Kate met Derek Draper through a mutual friend. They tied the knot a year later and had two children, Darcey and Billy. Derek’s tragic battle with long COVID began in March 2020, and in early 2024, Kate announced he had passed away following a serious heart attack.
But that wasn’t Kate’s only mishap on Tuesday. During another segment of Good Morning Britain, she managed to spill a cup of tea all over the table while prepping for the next part of the show. “I’ve ruined Lorraine’s studio!” she joked, grabbing tissues and trying to mop it up on-air.
It was one of those mornings where anything that could go wrong, did — but Kate handled it with the kind of humour and honesty that viewers love her for.
