Kate Garraway got real about how her kids are holding up when she stepped in to host ITV’s Lorraine this week. While chatting with Dr. Hilary Jones on the sofa, she shared that her 15-year-old son Billy recently suffered a pretty nasty injury — and the timing couldn’t have been worse.
“He’s doing his GCSEs at the moment and they start really early,” she explained. “In my day, which was O-Levels, it was June, but now most of them are over by the end of May. He did break his arm two weeks ago really badly in three places.”
Luckily, it wasn’t a total disaster for his exams. “Unfortunately it was his left hand so he can still write. So he’s got a cast but he can still write,” Kate added, clearly trying to look on the bright side.

Kate also gave a little update on her daughter, Darcey, who’s off at university now. “Darcey is doing great — she’s in her first year at uni now. [She’s reading] law and criminology so that’s a bit scary isn’t it,” she joked.
Of course, things haven’t been easy for the family. Kate mentioned that they’re “all moving forward as much as anyone can in the circumstances,” referring to the heartbreaking loss of her husband Derek Draper last year.
Kate’s return to Lorraine this week was a nostalgic one, as she was once a regular face on the show over a decade ago. Filling in while Lorraine Kelly takes a break over Easter, Kate told Good Morning Britain’s Richard Madeley and Charlotte Hawkins that being back felt like a mini vacation.
“I don’t know what’s going on. A later start, I’ve been looked after by everybody. It’s very exciting,” she laughed. “I feel like I’m having a nice time but I’ve actually got to do a show.”
Not long ago, Kate opened up to the Daily Mail Weekend Magazine about navigating motherhood without Derek. She admitted that the “hardest part of grieving” is doing it all solo for Billy and Darcey.
“There are so many moments where I just think, ‘Derek, where are you?’” she said. “Now, I have to take on everything — the fun parent, the one keeping everyone on track, and the one panicking, yelling, ‘Oh my God, you’re going to fail everything!’”
Kate kept it honest and relatable, admitting, “I make so many mistakes, but don’t we all? Is there really such a thing as a perfect mother?”
Lorraine airs weekdays at 9 am on ITV1 and ITVX.
