Kate Garraway gives heart-breaking update as husband Derek remains in hospital

Kate Garraway has issued an update on her husband's condition as he battles illness. The Good Morning Britain presenter gave an update on her husband Derek Draper who is currently in hospital being treated for sepsis.

The 55-year-old former political lobbyist has suffered from a number of health problems since he was struck down with Covid-19 in March 2020, resulting in him spending months in hospital. Kate has been open with fans about her husband's condition as he battles the after-effects of the virus.

Earlier this year she revealed Derek had communication and mobility problems but that she was finding new ways to form a closeness with her husband. But during the summer Kate was forced to pull out of one show after he became "seriously unwell" and it was later confirmed he was suffering from sepsis.

And the Mirror reports that Kate has revealed there had been a setback in Derek's progress and that he has been staying at the hospital. She said: "Derek is back in hospital after developing sepsis that again threatened his life and we are again fighting to get him home."

Of being a carer, she wrote for The Sun : "We all clapped for carers with vigour during the pandemic because they were saving lives right before our very eyes, but the trouble is, when the direct fear of life-or-death passes, this celebration gets quickly forgotten, but the caring goes on. It’s not sexy or the stuff of movies, like pulling someone from a burning building or giving mouth to mouth, but it’s no less vital to life."

Garraway recently opened up about caring for her husband in a documentary (ITV)

The couple have been married since 2005, and Kate has been tirelessly caring for him as he battles ill health. After contracting Covid, Derek was the longest Covid patient in hospital before being released home, but he was rushed back a couple of times for treatment, when Kate had to take time off work to be by her husband's side.

The presenter also revealed how she's been "frustrated, emotional and depressed" caring for Derek, but desperately "wants him to survive". She recently shared an intimate insight into her life and marriage in her ITV documentary 'Finding Derek' which showed how much her family's life had changed over the last two years.

Speaking to the camera she said: "In the documentary, you saw me frustrated, depressed, emotional. And I've been all of those and more in recent weeks and months and more. Because that's the thing with caring, you want it to carry on because you want the person to be surviving and still with you, so that you can care for them, but there isn't an endpoint and it doesn't get any easier."
