Kate Garraway faced 'tough dilemma' over Derek's care as she worried about next step

Kate Garraway faced a "tough dilemma" over her husband Derek Draper's care as she worried about the next step.

The Good Morning Britain presenter's spouse Derek was hospitalised with coronavirus back in March 2020, and whilst he has recovered from the virus himself, he still needs long term and around the clock care as he battles a range of health issues.

As Kate discussed a guest's own plight on paying for private care for a back operation, after being on the waiting list for a long period, the presenter admitted she was struggling to know what was the right thing to do herself for Derek.

"Not only are you in excruciating pain, but I would imagine very fearful over how this was going to progress," she said as her and co-host Ben Shepherd discussed the topic of paying for private healthcare and treatments.

"Because it is an operation that if you didn't have, it could have led to more damage you might well have felt."

She added: "You're hanging by a balance. I mean a dilemma of accessing private medicine or continuing to wait for NHS, I don't know what you've been through but it's a conversation I've been having with Derek's treatment."

Kate admitted it was a "tough one" for lots of people, who had to decide whether to go down the private route.

"It's such a tough one because if you don't have that money, then what do you do at that point? But then on the other hand, there's no price on being out on pain and in good health, is there?" she explained.

Meanwhile, Kate previously confessed she worries about the "money running out" as she cares for Derek.

"Because of his extreme health needs, he does have 24 hour care so somebody has to be awake at night and somebody has to be awake during the day and I can't be awake 24 hours so it's fantastic to have that," Kate explained as she opened up about his health.

She also discussed her and Derek's trip to Mexico, where he underwent treatment by a specialist doctor.

"That came at a really low point when I thought, 'oh god, this is not sustainable. The system, I mean I don't believe we can have 24 hour care forever, you know there's a point where money runs out!" she added, "It's a big moment, I was thinking, 'this isn't sustainable' and if there isn't the structure there to help long term, what are we actually going to do? Because we can't give up on him."
