Kate Garraway 'depressed and frustrated' as she opens up about husband Derek

TV presenter Kate Garraway has shared how she has been left ‘frustrated’ and ‘depressed’ as she cares for her husband Derek Draper. The couple have been married since 2005, but have faced a difficult two years with Derek's health deteriorating after he contracted coronavirus in 2020.

Taking to Instagram on World Mental Health Day, Kate opened up and spoke candidly about her feelings. The Good Morning Britain presenter revealed how she has been sometimes "frustrated, emotional and depressed" caring for Derek, but desperately "wants him to survive", reports The Mirror.

The 55-year-old recently shared an intimate insight into her life and marriage in her ITV documentary 'Finding Derek' which showed how much her family's life had changed over the last two years. Speaking to the camera she said: "In the documentary, you saw me frustrated, depressed, emotional.

"And I've been all of those and more in recent weeks and months and more.

"Because that's the thing with caring, you want it to carry on because you want the person to be surviving and still with you, so that you CAN care for them, but there isn't an endpoint and it doesn't get any easier."

Last month husband Derek returned to the hospital for a serious procedure, as he continues to battle with his health after first being hospitalised with Covid-19 in March 2020.

Derek was Britain’s longest-suffering hospital in-patient after contracting the virus. As a result of the virus which caused a global pandemic, Derek suffered significant, and lasting, damage to his organs after being put on a ventilator in intensive care.

A source said at the time: "This is another hammer blow for poor Derek.

"He is giving the fight against Covid his absolute all, but his kidneys have suffered some pretty serious damage.

"Doctors explained there was no alternative but to operate. Of course, Kate and the family are worried but she’s been reassured the procedure itself is routine.

"Everyone has everything crossed, and Kate is being her usual stoical self and keeping everything running, business as usual, on the home front."

Whilst Derek's health was in dire condition and he spent 13 months in hospital, TV presenter Kate was forced to take time away from presenting programmes like ITV's Good Morning Britain.

The star continues to share insights into her daily juggling of life on TV and being a carer for her husband, as he fights to improve his health.
