Kate Garraway celebrates daughter's 16th birthday with theatre trip after 'tough week'

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway treated her daughter to a birthday trip to the West End, after what she described as a "tough week".

Kate, 54, posted a picture of herself and her daughter Darcey smiling as they prepared to watch Dirty Dancing at the theatre for Darcey's 16th birthday.

The accompanying caption read: "Well what a way to celebrate your 16th birthday Eve!@ddongstage is the best fun & we are both in love with Johnny. And yes Darcey has already told me no one puts her in a corner! Just what the doctor ordered after a tough week."

The Life Stories host has been frank about the challenges she and her family have faced, after her husband Derek caught Covid in March 2020, and spent a year in hospital, suffering organ failure.

Fans were full of praise as they commented on the post.

One follower said: "Oh I think Darcey is just amazing at the way she has dealt with everything you've all been through, as it your son. Nobody deserves a special birthday more."

Another commented: "Happy Birthday Darcy! Wow! 16 tomorrow, enjoy your special day. You so deserve it, have followed with mum on the documentary about dad and you did your family proud."

A third said: "Love your resilience Kate. I look up to you."

Kate has made two documentaries since Derek left hospital and his care continued at home. The shows, Finding Derek and Caring for Derek, saw the radio host adjust to the changes in her life with with the political lobbyist turned psychotherapist and their children Darcey and William, 12.

Appearing on The One Show earlier this month, Kate spoke about the reaction to Caring for Derek, which has recently aired.

She said: "People have been so kind, generally it’s one of the lovely things about the horror story we have lived through, with the pandemic and what's going on now.

"The documentary really focused on the carers, and the unpaid ones, (unpaid) other than with the love of their loved ones. The parents, kids, partners, there’s millions of them.

Kate Garraway has chronicled how her family's life has changed since Derek contracted Covid (ITV)

"It’s such a wonderful thing to be able to do but it’s a tough thing and it’s tough for the carer."

The mum-of-two also spoke about Derek's trip to Mexico for a long Covid clinical trial, seen in the documentary.

She revealed the trip left her friends, including GMB co-presenter Ben Shephard, concerned for her "sanity".

She said: "There’s a point where money runs out and I was thinking, ‘this isn’t sustainable, there isn’t the structure there to help long-term, what are we actually going to do?’

"I can’t give up, I can’t give up on him."

"And I’ve been doing a lot of research on the following documentary of wonderful people who’ve contacted me and this particular doctor had dealt with people not as severe as Derek, but in the area."

Kate said that trip has given Derek the "possibility of hope", and he is due to return to Mexico next month.
