Kate Garraway broke down in tears when walking in on a touching moment between her husband and son on the day she brought Derek home for the first time in a year.
Derek, 54, contracted Covid in March 2020 and was hospitalised for over a year and is considered one of the worst cases of Covid recovery in the UK.
It has since been revealed that Kate has taken Derek to Mexico in order to take part in a ground-breaking trial.
But it was back in April 2021 that Derek was finally able to return home, with Kate and Derek's children eagerly awaiting his arrival.
During tonight's ITV documentary, which documents his return and caring for Derek, Kate explains her reservations over doing a follow-up to her BAFTA Award-winning Finding Derek.
"I'm very protective of Derek and I'm very protective of people seeing him vulnerable but I've talked to him a lot about this and I think he understands," she says. "Because we have to make it real, because it's the reality of people recovering... and it's not pretty."
Ahead of his arrival, Billy offers cameras a tour of his dad's new bedroom and bathroom.
Asked whether he's worried about his dad coming home, he replies: "Yeah, I don't really mind. I mean, obviously I mind but I'm not worried. Because I can finally complete the [lego] Death Star. I've been waiting to complete this until dad gets home."
After spotting the car driving into the driveway, Billy looks visibly excited and calls for his sister Darcey as they stare out the window.
Derek is wheeled into the house and Billy immediately offers him a hug, as does Darcey.
While Kate is getting Derek's bits ready in another room, Billy stands in front of his dad, staring and laughing awkwardly. He goes to sit on the sofa for a bit and asks: "Are you alright?"
Billy doesn't receive a response, but gets up again and stands in front of his dad again.
In an incredibly sweet moment, Derek is able to gesture that he wants a hug as he moves his arm upwards and Billy leans in to hug his dad.
In the other room, Kate is heard saying: "I can't believe how much stuff you've got."
Kate walks in and is startled by the scene and appears to cry, saying: "Oh god, god darling."
