Kate Ferdinand says she 'had a lot to learn' when becoming stepmum to mixed-race children

Kate Ferdinand revealed she 'had a lot to learn' when she became a stepmother to mixed-race children.

The 31-year-old tied the knot with footballer Rio Ferdinand in 2019.

The duo are parents to son Cree and she became a stepmother to Rio's three children Lorenz, 16, Tate, 14, and Tia, 11 - from his marriage to late wife Rebecca.

Speaking on her podcast, Blended, Kate revealed she 'didn't know what to do' when it came to looking after her stepchildren's hair.

"I remember when I joined the family – Tate has curly, really ringlety-long hair – I just didn't know what to do with it," she said.

"He'd tell me he brushed it and I'd just say 'OK then' and we'd just carry on with the day."

Kate continued: "And from then on I thought 'oh my gosh I haven't really taken into to consideration – I've got a lot to learn, here. I've got a lot to learn in all aspects; hair, skin, food, background, what's happened to their ancestors' just so I can be the best step parent I can because that's not something I naturally know.

"I come from a white household and I don't know all those things and I've never really – it might sound a bit ignorant – but I've never really thought about it in-depth and I think you don't until you're in this kind of situation."

Meanwhile, Kate is expecting her second child with her husband.

She recently admitted she's been feeling nervous about having a baby after having a miscarriage.

Last summer, she announced that she has suffered a "devastating" miscarriage and had to have surgery following her 12-week scan.

Six months later, Kate took to Instagram to reveal she was expecting another child with her husband.

The former TOWIE star made the pregnancy reveal on Instagram as she told fans they'd been 'praying' for another child.

In a black-and-white video, Kate walked away from the camera as she began unbuttoning her coat to reveal a glimpse of her pregnant stomach under a black midi dress.

When she spoke about the pregnancy , she admitted: "It's a bit of a worry with what happened last time with the miscarriage, and now we're going to have five children.

"When I say that out loud, that frightens me. But we're so excited, it's such a blessing."
