Kate and Meghan's shared love of designer 'caused tension as one got priority'

The Princess of Wales turned heads in an eye-catching navy outfit at the annual Commonwealth Day service.

Kate stunned yesterday in a dark blue peplum jacket and matching skirt that were both by the designer Erdem.

The British brand based in east London was founded by Erdem Moralıoğlu and Kate has worn his creations several times in the past.

And as well as the princess, Erdem has a legion of other fashion fans, including Kate's sister-in-law Meghan Markle.

It is well-known that Kate and Meghan have had a rocky relationship, with it detailed in Prince Harry's controversial tell-all memoir, Spare.

And it has been claimed the women's shared love of the designer may have been one of the things to cause tension in the early days of their relationship.

It was reported that things turned frosty when Meghan found herself behind Kate in the queue for the latest outfits from the designer.

Meghan had worn his designs several times before marrying Harry and becoming royal - but it wasn't until mid-2019 before she wore one of his creations while on an engagement.

And according to The Telegraph, this was because Kate had "first dibs" on designers and got priority over the Duchess of Sussex, which is said to have "gone down badly" with her.

Erdem has become the darling of the fashion industry since launching the label in 2005 - and Kate first wore one of his lace dresses on her first royal tour of Canada in 2011.

Other royals to have been spotted in his designs include Princess Eugenie, Princess Beatrice and Sophie, the new Duchess of Edinburgh.

But despite Kate wowing in Erdem yesterday, she almost suffered a fashion fail when a gust of wind almost blew off her Philip Treacy hat as she entered Westminster Abbey.

She was forced to hold down her hat as was Queen Consort Camilla, who also wore a Philip Treacy design teamed with a Fiona Clare coat.

She was also wearing the late Queen Elizabeth II’s sapphire and diamond brooch.

The sparkling diamond and sapphire piece set in platinum was worn by Princess Elizabeth for the official photos taken on her honeymoon with the late Duke of Edinburgh at Broadlands in Hampshire in 1947.

The service was the first one they had attended since Charles has become King - and was at the church where his Coronation will take place in less than two months' time.
