Kasper Schmeichel handed Celtic injury return timeline

Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel is potentially facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines, if reports in Denmark are to be believed.

The veteran keeper suffered a shoulder injury after a coming together with Diogo Jota during Denmark's Nations League tie against Portugal on Sunday night.

The 38-year-old was clearly in pain, but managed to finish the game with the Danes having used all of their substitutes.

Schmeichel had already saved a penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo by this point in the game, however, it was not enough to stop Portugal from winning the tie.

Now, Danish media outlet Nyheder 24 claims that the issue 'is not a minor injury'.

Their report states that there is a question mark hanging over the availability of the former Premier League title winner's fitness for the next international break in September, when they will face Scotland on September 5.

This would represent a huge blow for Brendan Rodgers and the Scottish Premiership champions.

Schmeichel would miss the Scottish Cup semi-final clash against St Johnstone, potentially the final of the tournament and even next season's Champions League qualifiers.

Denmark's team doctor, Morten Boesen, attempted to alleviate worries over the keeper's fitness after the weekend game in Lisbon.

He said: "Kasper Schmeichel's left shoulder was X-rayed last night and fortunately the images do not show anything abnormal.

"He is clearly in pain after a fall on his shoulder, so we are examining him further with an MRI scan."
